Sunday 29th April - Club 10K and Bracknell Half

Well, if you were one of the helpers, it was really vile weather. If you were one of the runners, it was also really vile weather!

There's a runner there somewhere.....
Anyway, our notebook has dried out enough to be able to get the pages apart and read the results of this morning's 10K. Well done to our 15 valiant runners, including Anne-Marie who twisted her ankle in the wet and was unable to finish the course. We hope you are over it quickly Anne-Marie. Well done as well to the five soggy helpers, Dave, Nathan, Dee, Bob and Steve, who escaped after the start to the only coffee bar in Windlesham that doesn't have any table or chairs, but did serve nice hot chocolate for us to drink standing up.

The results were:

Peter Mannion 39.02
Laura Hales 42.02
Keith Hull 42.09
Geoff Williams 42.51
Russell Conaway 44.50
Roland Clapton 45.40 PB
Jo Obertell 45.43 PB
John Coffey 50.38
Nick Askem 50.52
Mark Coxhead 53.06
Malcolm Vaughan 53.52
Pam Berriman 54.12
Lyn Taylor 56.10
Yvonne Lubbock 57.13

Brave souls!

But at least twice as brave were those taking on the Bracknell Half Marathon today, with a 9.00am start and the wind blowing the rain sideways across South Hill Park.

The survivors were:

Danny Mahoney 1:24:19
Julia Robinson 1:32:25
Gordon Trout 1:47:53

Those times gave all three age-graded ratings around 72%. Looking outside the top 20 finishers in the race, very few had age-gradings over 70% so this was excellent running all round, great stuff!

Prague Half Marathon - 31-03-12 by Simon.E

With Fleet Half Marathon selling-out in record time this year, and a spot of decorating beckoning, I decided to escape to the Czech Republic for a quick sight-seeing trip around the City of Prague in the form of their annual Half Marathon (much cheaper than paying for an actual tour!)

Flying time from the Heathrow is only 90 minutes, so I was able to evacuate chez Edwards undetected early Friday morning and arrive in Prague just in time for a spot of luncheon (pancakes). Having only approximately 36 hours to immerse myself in the local culture and inflict my dodgy Borat Czech accent on the locals I decided  to 'walk the City' briefly rather than flounder in the hotel. I started off with a view from Letna Park, before heading down to Czech-out the famous Charles Bridge, visit the Easter Market (filled with the smell of strudel, sausage, beer and delicious baked treats) and witness a mob of stag-do revellers egging-on the Easter bugler at the top of Astronomical Clock Tower in the Old Town Square. Bizarre.

The race was the next day at noon which saw 8000 plus runners from all over Europe crammed into a side road waiting for the start gun, preceeded by a rousing rendition of the national anthem (stirring stuff indeed -I was actually a little choked-up!). The streets were packed with with supporters and well-wishers and the route was lined with historic stuff and several heavy metal bands (and tram lines and cobbles, which very nearly ended me on several occasions). I crossed the finishing line in 1hr 39 mins, happy for the experience but pleased to be getting on a plane 3 hours later, making it home in time for a late tea and before anyone had noticed I'd gone.....before the cry "...and why are you limping?!"

Olympic Park Run, 31 March, Report by Steve

After months of waiting, The National Lottery Olympic Park Run was finally here. A five mile race through the Olympic Park, this would be the first public event to take place in the Olympic Stadium, where the runners would do a lap of the track to finish the race. The runners were to be the first to cross the Olympic Stadium finish line in a competitive event, leaving 5000 people able to say “I beat Usain Bolt to the Olympic finish line”!
Over 40,000 people had applied for the ballot for 5,000 places, and there were four Windle Valley Runners who were successful – Katie, Lyn, Tony and me.

The £15 entry fee got us all a red running shirt, personalised numbers, and two spectator entry tickets to the park and stadium, plus free race photos and certificates.
The information pack advised us to get there early on the day, for a 2pm race start.  We got to Stratford to find long queues snaking round towards the park entrance, but after about 15 minutes queuing, and airport-style security at the entry, we were in, walking between the Aquatics and Water Polo arenas to get to the Stadium. There was entertainment in the Stadium from 12.30, with various musical and dance acts performing to keep the crowd entertained.

Before the race, I bumped into Robin Wakefield, who missed out in the ballot but whose wife Lucia got his place! Then on my way from the Stadium to the race start I managed to take a tumble over a cable and skinned my elbow, but nothing broken, my water bottle took the main impact! Too busy gawking at the sights to watch where I was going. Then at 2.00 we were off! Princess Beatrice was the official starter before herself joining in the race. Starting by the Orbit Tower, the course took us round the whole of the park and past all the sports arenas, but for quite a lot of the route it felt like running round a building site – which it was! Still, four months is plenty of time to get it finished for The Games. The route included a circuit of the terrace of the Velodrome, from where you could see all the runners ahead of you and behind you. There were several points where it looped around and again you could see a lot of the course ahead and behind you. Finally, we were entering the Olympic Stadium, running a half circuit inside the building to the strains of “Chariots Of Fire”, before bursting out into the stadium proper and onto the running track, where there were 10,000 spectators cheering us round the last 300 metres. I saw Pat in the crowd and waved to her, then crossed the finish line in 38.40. It was really very exciting to be running there, with the crowd, and the thoughts of what will be happening on that same track in four months’ time. After finishing, I watched the rest of the race from the comfy seats, and saw Tony come in, clearly enjoying his moments on the track.

Windle Valley Results:

Steve Moody – 38m 40s

Weekend Round-up

Starting on Saturday morning, the Frimley Parkrun provided its usual set of excellent results by Windle Valley Runners. It was quality not quantity this week, with personal bests by Pam Berriman and Chris Dent (for the 2nd week in a row!), and another sub-20 by Peter Hansen.

Results are here and race photos here

Also on Saturday, we had four runners at another "park run" - this time the Olympic Park Run, where Katie Pearce, Steve Moody, Lyn Taylor and Tony Sheridan were vying to be first across the finish line in the first ever competitive event to use the Olympic Stadium. There's a separate race report on its way for that.

Then on Sunday, never mind all this messing about with flat fast fives, Mike and Debby Hewison showed us how it should be done, running a hilly 16 mile off-roader from Combe Gibbet to Overton. In their first race for the club, Mike completed it in 2h10m, and Debby in 2h28m.

Finally, a week earlier, Colin Woods ran the Eastleigh 10K in 54.24, beating his 2011 time by almost 4 minutes. Well done Colin!

Le Jog by GT

Now, if like me, you are among the uninitiated, you might expect from the title that this is about what French people like Christelle stay do to look after their health and good looks.

Not at all - it's actually about our very own Gordon Trout, and how he stays so young and healthy looking (and it's not by jogging!)

Here's a clue:
And another:

An epic journey indeed. But how did he do it?
